Artist Statement: Kibbutz Ramat Rachel of “Gdud Ha-Avodah” was founded in 1926 on land purchased from the Greek Patriarchate of Jerusalem (1925). Its members believed in socialistic ideals and were committed to the urban working class. They worked as miners, builders and load-bearers in British Mandate Jerusalem, as well as in agriculture and in the Dead Sea potassium plant. In the cemetery lie the pioneers and their children, and the defenders of the kibbutz who died in the many attacks it suffered. Ramat Rachel was destroyed in 1929 and 1948 and rebuilt by its members each time. The kibbutz has buried its members in the cemetery since its foundation and until today.
