Key Meanings: Project for the conservation and development of the important but neglected archaeological site located under the Jaffa Gate - Jerusalem’s main historical entrance. The site is ‘buried’ under a network of modern constructions including a bridge, a busy road and a parking complex.
Artist Statement: Excavated in the 1970’s as part of the Mamilla quarter development, this important site has been neglected ever since. The project aims, through the construction of a pedestrian bridge and an elevator, to solve topographical difficulties and to create a meaningful entrance to the old city of Jerusalem through the remains of its ancient past. The use of running water echo’s the Roman period aqueduct which entered the city at this location and continued to function until the 20th century.
